Owasso started life in 1881 as the "Elm Creek" settlement in the Cherokee Nation's Cooweescoowee District. When the Kansas, Oklahoma Central and Southwestern Railway arrived in 1897, the town relocated around the new depot, and the post office was renamed Owasso in 1900 — a name generally interpreted to mean "the end" or "the turn-around," referring to where the rail line's locomotives turned back. Owasso has since become one of the fastest-growing communities in the Tulsa metro: from about 11,000 residents in 1990 to over 38,000 by 2020. Major regional employers like American Airlines, Nordam Group, and Whirlpool anchor the area's economy, and Owasso sits on U.S. Highway 169, roughly six miles north of Tulsa's city limits.
