Coweta sits about 30 miles southeast of Tulsa and traces its name to a Lower Creek town in Georgia, brought here when the Muscogee (Creek) Nation was relocated to Indian Territory. The area was settled around 1840, and after the Civil War, everything northeast of the Arkansas River — including what's now Tulsa — was administered as the Creek Nation's "Coweta district." Today's Coweta is a much smaller, close-knit city of roughly 9,700 residents, with two sites on the National Register of Historic Places: the Koweta Mission cemetery and the Mission Bell Museum, once the First Presbyterian Church of Coweta.
