Porter was founded in 1903 along a new Missouri, Kansas and Oklahoma Railroad line and incorporated in 1905, named for Pleasant Porter, who went on to serve as a principal chief of the Creek (Muscogee) Nation. The town sits on rich farmland between the Verdigris and Arkansas rivers in Wagoner County, on State Highway 51B between Tulsa and Muskogee — and that farmland made Porter famous for peaches.
After Creek allotee Ben Marshall won a gold medal for his peaches at the 1904 Louisiana Purchase Exposition, peach farming became the area's signature crop, and Porter has held an annual Peach Festival since 1967.
Porter has stayed a genuinely small town throughout its history — its population has hovered between roughly 560 and 640 residents for more than a century.
